2008 XC Season News

Suzie Clinchy Places 93rd at ACC Championships
Sophomore Suzie Clinchy ('07) had her best collegiate race of her career and her best race of any kind in about three years when she placed 93rd at the ACC Championships for Wake Forest, which finished 3rd. Clinchy was the 7th girls for her team meaning she made the varsity team for the first time.

Clinchy missed her junior year indoor and outdoor track season with injuries and struggled to regain her form senior year in HS. hrough ahrd work and dedication she has bounced back very nicely. We are so proud. MEET ARTICLE AND RESULTS HERE

Lynchberg wins ODAC Title, Apgar brothers pitch in

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Lynchburg College men's cross country team, ranked third regionally, claimed its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship since 2002, as the LC harriers won the championship 8K run, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College.

The Lynchburg squad accumulated 50 points, just two points ahead of second-place VWC. Junior Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) was the top individual finisher, clocking a time of 24:56, which was 30 seconds faster than the next person to cross the line. His time was also the third-best time in Lynchburg cross country history.

Also scoring for the Hornets was Pat Jacobs (Bloomingdale, NJ/Butler), who posted a time of 25:46 for sixth place, while Rich Apgar (Somers, NY/Somers) finished 13th with a time of 26:19. Brandon Demers (Cypress, TX/Leonardtown) finished in 26:21 for 14th place, earning all-conference honors along with Flynn, Jacobs and Apgar. Lawrence Minor (Mineral, VA/Louisa) was the last scorer for LC, clocking a time of 26:23 for 16th place.

Head Coach Dr. Jack Toms was honored as the league's co-Coach of the Year. Washington & Lee University, the pre-season pick to win the conference, finished third with 59 points, followed by Bridgewater (77), Roanoke (127), Hampden-Sydney (209), Guilford (223), Emory & Henry (232), Eastern Mennonite (251) and Randolph (297).

LC will now look forward to the South/Southeast Regional meet which is set for Saturday, November 15 in San Antonio, TX.

Running for Geneseo, Josh Kneer ('06) placed 31st in 26:42 for the 2nd place team. Former teammate Niko Viglione ('05) ran his last college XC race as he placed 41 in 26:59 for Cortland. Cortland is ranked #1 in the country in D3 while Geneseo is ranked 10th. NCAA Polls Here

Greg Swiatocha (2002) runs 2:53 marathon while kid brother Doug (2006) goes 2:48 at Steamtown. Congrats. Both starred at Somers and competed at state championships. Doug was All-State/All-American, Greg All Section.

9/28 - Hoffman Invitational - St. Lawrence U., Canton, NY - Kneer goes 26:22
Josh Kneer ran a career best 26:22 for 8K to finish as Geneseo's 5th man as they beat SUNY Cortland, where Somers grad and training partner Niko Viglione ran 27:23. Yes, Josh is very hairy.

The men's cross country team, ranked 16th in the latest USTFCCCA Division III coaches poll, scored 64 points to finish in first place of 16 teams at the St. Lawrence Invitational. Nationally #1 ranked Cortland finished second with 67 points. Junior Tim Chichester finished seventh of 250 runners for the Knights with a time of 25:37 and Jesse Berube placed 10th in a time of 26:00. Sophomore Tom Reubens was 14th in 26:14, Chris Mateer placed 15th in 26:17 and Josh Kneer completed the scoring five by crossing 18th in 26:22.


9/06 - Hanover, IN - NCAA DIII Pre-Nationals - Way to go Apgar Boys!

HANOVER, IN and LEXINGTON, VA – The Lynchburg College men and women’s cross country teams ran this weekend in two meets, as a squad of men and women traveled to the Madison Kiwanis Invite in Hanover, IN. LC also sent a group of runners to the Generals Cross Country Invite in Lexington, VA.

The Hornet men finished seventh in the Madison Kiwanis Invite, as 13 nationally ranked teams competed on the 8K course. Lynchburg was paced by Ryan Van Alstine (Midland Park, NJ) who finished 26th in a time of 27:11. Lawrence Minor (Mineral, VA/Louisa) clocked a 27:34 for 40th place, and teammate Rich Apgar (Somers, NY/Somers) was a spot behind him with a time of 27:36. Pat Jacobs (Bloomingdale, NJ/Butler) and Todd Apgar (Somers, NY/Somers) also both scored for LC.

9/05 - Alex Swiatocha breaks 19:00!
Swi runs 18:49 for 3rd place at Blue Devil Invitational. Former HS all american keeps getting better as senior year looks to be her best yet.

8/30 - Apgar brothers race well in debut
Running for Lynchburg, Sophomore Rich Apgar led the Hornets with a time of 28:23, finishing tenth, while little brother Todd Apgar placed 12th with a time of 28:30. Todd's race was his firts ever 8K (5 mile) race.

Niko Viglione (2005) SUNY Cortland - Earns NCAA All American
Viglione placed 7th in the NCAA DIII 1500m in 3:53 to become the first NCAA All American for a Somers grad in over 20 years. Congrats Niko. He runs for SUNY Cortlandt. Niko's season best of 3:51 was a PR and sets him up for a great chance to be national champion this year.

As a HS senior, Niko led his team to a NY State Championship in cross country, the only such title in Somers school history. He ran 1:56, 4:23, and 9:51 steeple his senior year.

With mileage peaking at 145/week this summer, look for big things from this senior to be.

Rachel Cassata (2006) - school record holder in the pole vault and shuttle hurdles - competes for Northeastern. Rachel is one of only three athletes in school history to win three events at a Sectional championships in one season.
Rich Apgar (2007) Lynchburg - Earns All Conference Honors!
Alumnus Rich Apgar (2007) led the Lynchburg College Distance Medley Relay team to a first place finish with a conference championship fastest 1200 meter split time of 3 minutes and 11 seconds. The team's overall DMR time of 10:40.02 is a new ODAC record and that was with their miler jogging the last 600 meters because the men had built up such a large lead. Two hours later Rich finished fifth in the open 800 meter event in a time of 2:00.66. This was quite an impressive double for the freshman on a relatively slow, flat track. The championship took place ay Liberty University in Virginia. Rich earned first team ALL CONFERENCE honor for his accomplishments. The Lynchburg men went on to win their eleventh straight indoor championship in a tight battle with Bridgewater College.

Alex Bean (2006) - Georgetown University
Three time All-American and 4 Time all state in HS, 2nd at The Penn Relays, Millrose Games qualifier. Known as "The Beastmaster" in HS for doing things like winning the 3200m-1000m-1600m at the County meet indoors. He holds more school records than any other athlete in school history.

While at Georgetown, Bean has run 2:23 1K and 3:47 1500m and 4:06 for the mile. He redshirted his sophomore spring track season. Get ready for big things this year on the track for Mr. Bean.
